What is bipolar disorder?
A
A severe mental illness, in which episodes of mania are experienced with or without episodes of depression

How does bipolar disorder differ from the normal ups and downs of everyday life?
A
- More extreme mood changes and often not in response to any trigger
Episodes of mania/depression are:
- More distinct
- More varied
- Last longer
- Have more extreme symptoms

What are the signs/symptoms of a manic episode?
A
- Happiness, elation, euphoria
- Full of energy
- Grandiose ideas
- Easily distracted
- Not eating
- Overspending
- Delusions, hallucinations

What are the signs/symptoms of a depressive episode?
A
- Feeling sad & hopeless
- Lacking in energy
- Difficulty concentrating
- Lack of appetite
- Sleep problems
- Suicidal thoughts
- Early awakening

What are the ICD-10 diagnostic criteria of a manic episode?
A
- Increased activity or physical restlessness, talkativeness, sexual energy, sociability or over-familiarity
- Difficulty concentrating or distractibility
- Decreased need for sleep
- Mild spending sprees or other types of reckless/impulsive/irresponsible behaviour
- Loss of normal social inhibitions, resulting in inappropriate behaviour

A
- Reduced concentration, attention, self-esteem, self-confidence
- Ideas of guilt & unworthiness
- Bleak & pessimistic views of future
- Ideas or acts of self-harm or suicide
- Disturbed sleep
- Diminished appetite

What is the Beck Depression Inventory?
What are its advantages and disadvantages?
A
- 21 question multiple choice self-report measure of the severity of depression
Advantages:
- Guided by patient’s own thoughts
- Quantitative
- Affective & somatic sub-scales
Disadvantages:
- Scores can be easily exaggerated or minimised
- Environment in which form filled can make a difference
- May expose symptoms of conditions other than depression
