What does the minority stress model show?
A
Experiences of homophobia, stigma & discrimination are internalised and have a negative impact on mental wellbeing & cause increased psychological distress

What is the difference between proximal and distal stressors in the minority stress model?
A
- Proximal stressors = within person i.e. internalised (e.g. expectations of rejection)
- Distal stressors = prejudice events (e.g. discrimination)

What sociodemographic risks are associated with the minority stress model?

- Younger age
- Illness or disability
- Low income
- School problems
- Family rejection
- Homelessness
- Isolation

What are the barriers to MH help-seeking in young people?
A
- Public, perceived & self-stigmatising attitudes to mental illness
- Confidentiality & trust
- Difficulty identifying sx
- Concern about characteristics of provider
- Reliance on self -> don’t want help
- Knowledge about MH services
- Fear or stress about act of help-seeking or source of help itself
- Lack of accessibility e.g. time, transport, cost
- Difficulty or unwillingness to express emotion
- Don’t want to burden someone else
- Prefer other sources of help e.g. family, friends
- Worry about effect on career
- Others not recognising need for help or not having skills to cope
