- hunger weakens the immune system –> infectious and nutrient deficiency diseases
- children and pregnant women most at risk of poor nutrition –> child mortality

- adequate nutrition strengthens immune system –> less likely to develop related diseases
- reduce maternal and child mortality from deficiency diseases

- eradicate hunger –> better immune system functioning –> less likely to contract communicable diseases (e.g. cholera)
