SCUBA Flashcards
what is the normal working limit for SCUBA?
what is the MAX working limit?
130 fsw
190 fsw w/CO or OIC approval
What are the applications for SCUBA? (3)
shallow water searching
inspections
light repair and recovery
what is the current restriction for SCUBA?
1 knot MAX
*greater than 1 requires ORM analysis - may be approved with buoy tied to diver
In areas with strong currents, schedule work during?
slack water (between tides)
what is the volume/working pressure for
- steel 72’s?
- aluminum 80’s?
- 7 scf/2250 psig
81. 85 scf/3000 psig
How often are cylinders inspected?
5 years pressure test
annually, visual
or if ever at ZERO
Which valve contains a reserve mechanism,?
J-valve (as opposed to K-valve)
Below what temperature is wet suit thermal protection recommended for SCUBA?
what about dry suit?
80F
40F
What are the minimum manning requirements for SCUBA operation?
4: Dive SUP Diver Dive Tender (or Buddy Diver) Standby Diver
What line pull signal is never answered?
444
How often should a tender signal a diver?
every 2-3 minutes
From Tender to Diver: 1 2 3 4 2-1
1 - are you alright? (on ascent, stop) 2 - going down (on ascent, go back down) 3 - standby to come up 4 - come up 2-1 I understand or talk to me
From Diver to Tender 1 2 3 4 2-1
1 - I am alright (on descent, stop) 2 - lower or give me slack 3 - take up slack 4 - haul me up 2-1 I undesrtand or talk to me
Special Signals
1-2-3
5
2-1-2
send me a square mark
send me a line
send me a slate
Emergency
2-2-2
4-4-4
I am fouled and need assistance
Haul me up immediately
Searching Signals (without circling line) 7 1 2 3 4
7 - go on (or off) searching signals
1 - stop and search where you are
2 - move away from tender if given slack, move toward tender if strain is taken
3 - face umbilical, take strain, move right
4 - face umbilical, take strain, move left
Searching Signals (with circling line) 7 1 2 3 4
7 - go on (or off) searching signals 1 - stop and search where you are 2 - move away from the weight 3 - face weight, go right 4 - face weight, go left
What are reasons for an emergency free ascent?
what are the EPs?
fouled equipment
loss of air
incap/uncon diver
drop all tools ditch weight belt inflate BC only ditch SCUBA if absolutely necessary exhale continuously to surface with head back and airway open - watch for overhead obstructions notify dive sup immediately
EP for trapped diver (7)
- approach with caution
- assess area for safety
- assess diver
- is diver injured?
- does diver have air and how much?
- what will it take to free diver?
- return to surface and report to Dive Sup
EP for injured diver (4)
- approach with caution
- assess area for safety
- stabilize injury as best you can and ascend to surface at 30fpm
- once at suface start BTLS and notify dive sup
EP for loss of air (5)
- notify buddy
- check air supply (air on, back 1/4 turn)
- check reserve
- try 2ndary reg (octopus) or other air source if available
- buddy breathe and abort dive
What are reasons for unconscious diver? (5_
CO tox CO2 tox N2 narc entrapment/injury disorientation/poor visibility
EP for unconscious diver
- approach with caution
- open airway in [INSERT REG?]
- ensure cylinder valve is on, check air/reserve
- ensure open airway
- 444
- ascend - holding airway open and pressing on chest
- when both heads above surface - fully inflate BC and keep head above water
- yell help and report to dive sup including vitals/tank pressure
EP for lost diver (3)
- Make 360 turn looking for bubbles (note max depth and bottom time)
- ascend, looking for bubbles (if found, follow down to lost diver)
- on surface notify dive sup
what are the dry and wet SCUBA charging rates?
what is the minimum pressure differential for driving force?
400 psig max wet
200 psig max dry
50 PSIG
