SCT Test 2 Video Notes Flashcards
What’s the advantage to using scientific notation when working with millions, billions, and trillions?
You don’t have to write out all the zeros, which saves you a lot of time on an actual test.
If you paid $8.73 for a T-shirt that was 20%, what is the equation for the regular price of the T shirt?
80/100(p) = 8.73
question 3 two methods explain
What is reflective symmetry?
When you draw a line through a shape and when both sides of the shape are folded along the line, they fall on each other perfectly (ex. a square, line of symmetry exactly in the middle)
What is rotational symmetry?
When you place a point in a shape and if you rotate the shape around that center by 90° and 180°, you have the exact same shape.
How to solve a question with a basic pattern and asks for a large transition (ex. pattern of black squares surrounded by white squares, 1 black square, 2 black squares, 3 black squares, and the question asks for 157 black squares)
Notice similarities in each of the patterns that don’t change no matter what, and apply that to the question. Try to create and equation and solve.
How do you apply ratios to a slope?
convert the ratio to fraction and then treat it as a slope
How do you convert minutes into seconds?
multiply the number of minutes by 60
How do you convert meters into kilometers?
divide the number of meters by 1,000
What’s the first thing you should do after reading and speed x time x distance problem?
DRAW A PICTURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What is a direct proportionality?
If x increases, y increases - y1/x1 = y2/x2
When asked in a question which point to perform a rotation about, what should you do?
draw a picture simulating the rotation about each point and compare to the final image
How do you find an irrelevant research question?
use keywords and see if they match the question and use critical thinking to try and relate the question to the research; if checks out, then it is a relevant question
When asked for a response to a question based on data, what should you do? (ex. I just heard in the news 18% of people have the flu. Do I really have the flu?)
Find the answer that relates the data provided in the question (ex. you have an 18% chance of having the flu)
Will a calculator be provided on the STEM Critical Thinking test?
No, a calculator will not be provided.
