Sclera Flashcards
Give a breif description of the sclera
A tough white outer protective collagenous coat of the eye
What does the sclera contain
collagen, proteins and muscopolysaccharide
What is the function of the sclera
Protects the eye from injury
Support the eye
Anchorage for stuctures both withing the globe and outside
What is pinguecula (yellow sclera in elderly)
an alteration of normal tissue resulting in a depositof protein and far in the conjunctiva, the thin membrane that covers the white part of the eye
Why is the sclera bluish
due to scleral thining
What is the sclera brownish
due to hyper pigmentation
What are the large openings in the sclera and where are they located
Anterior scleral foramen (adjacent to cornea)
Posterior scleral foramen (in optic nerve head) has a siece like appearance
What are the respective small openings in the sclera for
Votex vein
Long posterior ciliary artery
short posterior ciliary artery
anterior ciliary artery
What are the three layers in the sclera (from furthest away fom choroid to closest)
Episclera
Scleral stroma
lamina fusca
What is the episclera and where is it located
Vascular tissue layer lying between the scleral stroma and the bulbar conjunctiva
Does the episclera contain collagen
yes
What does the scleral stroma contain
collagen fibres, fibroblasts and muscopolusaccharide
How are the collagen fibres in the scleral stroma arranged
various thickness and irregularly arranged
Is the sclera stroma vascular or avascular
relatively avascular
What are the structures in lamina fusca
collagen fibres, fibroblasts and melanocytes
