Scientology Flashcards
who did it begin with
L.Ron Hubbard
L. Ron Hubbard’s life?
Born in Nebraska, he befriends a blackfoot shaman/medicine person. As a super intelligent young boy he read on philosophy and then travels the world, and becomes a writer of science fiction novels. He joins WWII and gets injured but they can’t heal him.
According to Hubbard, how was he able to recover from his war wounds?
He realizes his wounds are
mental, not physical. If he can heal himself mentally by removing mental blockages, he can heal himself physically
Does this belief/practice (healing yourself) still linger in Scientology today?
If you have cancer you don’t need chemo, you
just need to remove these mental blockages. Scientology is opposed to pills like antidepressants and
mental health meds.
what book did Hubbard write
Dianetics.
- this books publication was the start of scientology
how is Hubbard a controversial figure?
accused of starting a religion just to make money
thetan?
-Is a spirit/soul that humans possess
- it can interact with the outside world but still remains eternal
can ones thetan be passed to other bodies via reincarnation?
yes.
what is it called when an awareness of one’s thetan can make one an enlightened being
Operating Thetan (ie tom cruise)
engrams
-part of the enlightenment process that is when traumatic experiences stored in one’s subconscious that are passed from one reincarnation to the next
-a “pschoanalysis” (auditing) of these engrams using an e-meter releases one from their bondage and paves the way towards enlightment.
Why is auditing a controversial practice?
You think back to your childhood and previous reincarnations
to look for mental blockages created by trauma to create an engram. Auditing is also controversial because it costs a LOT of money and it can cause celebrities 1 million dollars, the lowest rate being 100 thousand. It is the only way to enlightenment, and must occur regularly
How is auditing performed on Operating Thetans?
The only way is on a cruise ship
Using the lie detector/e-meter, they can uncover trauma and ask questions that prompt the person to deal with it
other beliefs of Scientology
monotheism, reincarnation
Briefly describe a typical Scientology church and worship service.
We do not have one in Lethbridge, but there are lots in California. 8 pointed cross represents the 8 dynamics of life. Auditing room with e-meters
Why are celebrities closely linked to the religion?
They bring
clout/attention/attention/members/MONEY to the religion. The celebrities are treated very well
