Scientific understandings of the outdoors Flashcards
Producers
Through the process of photosynthesis, PRODUCERS (Autotrophs) manufacture complex inorganic substances, generally CO2 and H2O – using the energy of sunlight to do so.
Consumers
Animals are CONSUMERS, (heterotrophs) that is they use the bodies of other organisms as a source of food energy.
Decomposers
DECOMPOSERS breakdown organic material and use the decomposition products to supply themselves with energy
Food chains and food webs
A food chain outlines who eats whom. A food web is all of the food chains in an ecosystem. Each organism in an ecosystem occupies a specific trophic level or position in the food chain or web.
Biotic
Living things
Abiotic
Non-living things
Subsystems
Ecosystems are made up of subsystems that interact with each other. These are largely made up of the abiotic and biotic components.
Atmosphere
The gas that surrounds the earth. We rely on this for Nitrogen, and O2 - and we are the only planet that is known that has O2 to sustain us.
Hydrosphere
all the water on earth
Lithosphere
The soil and rocky crust of the earth and it’s core of molten rock.
Organism
Refers to single living thing
Species
Is a group of organisms of the same type that are capable of interbreeding.
Population
Is a group of organisms of the same species living together in the one area.
Community
Consists of a number of populations of different species living together in an environment
Habitat
Refers to the specific place within an ecosystem that is occupied by an organism or population
