Risk
The potential to lose something that you value, versus the possibility of gaining something you value.
Absolute Risk
Uppermost limit of risk
Real risk
The amount of risk that actually exists at a given moment
Perceived risk
Individuals subjective assessment of the real risk present at anytime
Perceived example
A novice on a moderately difficult climb may see undertaking the climb as being a fairly high risk activity
Real example
Due to the amount of safety features in place on a climb including things like harness, dynamic rope, belayer, back up belayer, the risk is actually quite low
Exploration and Experimentation
Where the task is easy and individual may find time to pause or experiment with the task
Adventure
Experience where the individual is placing themselves at risk where outcome is uncertain
Peak Adventure
Difficulty of the task is equal to that of the competence of the individual creating optimal arousal, resulting in maximal performance, in a state of flow
Misadventure
A state of mind where the immediate reactions are negative rather than positive and the challenge becomes to difficult for the individual
Devestation and Disaster
The degree of difficulty is far greater than that of individuals competence where serious harm or death may result
