Scientific skills Flashcards
All the comparison and like IV/DV stuff sorta thing
Define what flashpoint is
the temperature at which a particular organic compound gives off sufficient vapour to ignite in the air
What is the independent variable?
The independent variable is a factor that is changed or manipulated in an experiment to determine it’s effect on the dependent variable.
What is the dependent variable?
The dependent variable is measured to determine if the change or manipulation of the independent variable had any effect.
What is a controlled variable?
A controlled variable is one that is kept constant throughout the experiment.
What is Qualitative data?
Data which is collected based on observations taken during the experiment (descriptive)
eg. colour change
What is Quantitative data?
Data which provides a numerical value
eg. measurements
What is primary and secondary data?
- Primary = data evaluated and collected by original experimenter
- Secondary = data evaluated or collected indirectly from other experimenters
When drawing a graph, what do you have to remember?
the initialism
SPLATU
*What is Validity?
*relates to whether or not the results obtained by the experimental design are able to answer the aim or hypothesis
What is reproducibility?
The closeness of the agreement between the results of measurements of the same quantity, carried out under changed conditions
What is repeatability?
The closeness of the agreement between the results of successive measurements of the same quantity, carried out under the same conditions
What is resolution?
The smallest change in quantity that is measurable
What is accuracy?
How close it is to the ‘true’ value of the quantity being measured.
What is precision?
How closely a set of measurement values agree with each other.
What is viscosity?
a measure of the resistance to flow of a liquid
*note: it decreases the smaller the molecule as it can flow better as weaker dispersion forces
