Organic Flashcards
DO ALL THE ORGANIC STUFF
What are alkanes?
- They are saturated
- Have only single bonded carbons
What are alkenes?
- They are unsaturated
- Have at least 1 double bonded carbons
What are alkynes?
- They are unsaturated
- Have at least 1 triple bonded carbons
What are amines?
- They have a NH2 group
- NOT attached to oxygen
What are amides?
- They have a NH2 group
- IS attached to oxygen
What is an alcohol?
- They have an -OH group
What is a primary, secondary and tertiary alcohol?
- Primary = C(OH)
- Secondary= C-C(OH)-C
- Tertiary = C-COH(C)-C
What is an aldehyde and what is a ketone?
- Aldehyde = R-C(O)-H
- Ketone = R-C-CO-C-R
What is a carboxylic acid?
- Has a R-COOH
What is an ester?
- Has a R-COOC-R
What is a structural isomer?
Are molecules that have the same molecular formula but differ in the spatial arrangement of their atoms
What is the order of strength from weakest to strongest for intermolecular forces?
Dispersion < Dipole-Dipole < Hydrogen bonds
What is the factors of a molecule that effect its boiling point?
- length of carbon-carbon chain (particularly in non-polar molecules)
- the strength of the intermolecular forces present
- Branching as kinks results in no packaging compared to linear chains
What is the substitution reaction for alkanes + halogen?
Alkane + Halogen –(UV light)–> Haloalkane + (else)
What is the substitution reaction for haloalkane (alcohol)?
Haloalkane –(NaOH/has a hydroxide group)–> Alcohol
