Rates and Equilibrium Flashcards
LEARNING RATES (The easy one)
What are the 3 things that have to happen in order for molecules to successfully collide?
- They collide
- They collide with sufficient energy (to break bonds b/w reactants)
- They collide with the correct orientation (to break bonds b/w reactants)
What is Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution?
It shows the distribution of kinetic energies of particles on a graph
What is rate of reaction?
The change in concentration of a reactant or product per unit time
What are the 5 things that can change the rate of reaction?
- Surface area (of solid reactants)
- Concentration (of a solution)
- Pressure of gases (or volume)
- Temperature
- Catalyst usage
What are the key terms to use when talking about surface area/concentration/pressure affecting the rate of reaction?
Increases/Decreases the frequency of successful collisions PER UNIT TIME
What are the key terms to use when talking about temperature affecting the rate of reaction?
- Increase/Decrease in kinetic energy
- Increases/Decreases the PROPORTION of particles with sufficient energy to react
- Increases/Decreases the frequency of successful collisions PER UNIT TIME
What are the key terms to use when talking about catalysts affecting the rate of reaction?
- They lower the activation energy
- They increase the PROPORTION of particles with sufficient energy to react
- This increases the frequency of successful collisions PER UNIT TIME
*note: catalysts do NOT affect yield, only affects rate of reaction
