Scientific Principles Flashcards
Thinking to avoid
Grouping people, confirmation bias, over confident
Attitudes to maintain as a psychologist
Curiosity, skeptics, open minded, humble, cautious, ethical, confidentiality
Initial observation
When you first take a look at something for studying
Hypothesis
Testable question eg: more men snore than women
Descriptive research
Describing what you see
Case study
Examines one individual in depth, hoping to reveal what is true to all.
Survey
Looks at many cases in depth. Asks people to report behavior or opinions
Naturalistic observation
Observing and recording behavior in naturally occurring situations without manipulating the situation
Eg: watching chimpanzees
Correlation
Measure of two factors varying together and relate to eachother
Correlation coefficient. Positive and negative
Statistical relationship between the two things
Positive: two things together increase or decrease together.
Negative: inverse relationship. Eg: alcohol and coordination
Closer you get to zero, the weaker the correlation bond is
Experiment
A research method in which one or more factors are manipulated to observe the effect on behavior
Independent
What you are doing
Studying window offices if they improve workers satisfaction
Dependent variable
Independent effects depending. It depends on independent
Eg: worker mood with the windows in the office
Experimental group
The group exposed to the treatment
Control group
Not exposed to the treatment
Eg: not getting cats
