scientific method/microscopes Flashcards
what is the scientific method?
series of steps used by scientists to solve a problem/answer to a question.
whats the steps of the scientific method? (5 steps)
step one: observe/ask a questions step two: form a hypothesis step theee: design a controlled expiriment step four: record and analyze results step five: drawing conclusions
whats a hypothesis?
possible explanation to a question/problem
whats a controlled experiment?
only one variable changes at a time
what is an independent variable?
is being deliberately changed by the scientist
whats the dependent variable?
observed during an experiment
whats a theroy?
a broad statment of what is thought to be true
who is Hans and Zacharias Janssen?
built a compound microscope of 20x
whats compound mean?
more than one lens
whos Robert Hooke?
first to use the term cell, observed many cells and focused on understanding cork and 1665
whos Antoni van Leeuwenhoek?
used single lens light microscope (250x mag.) and first to see/record bacteria
whats magnification?
number of times larger the specimen appears under a lens
whats resolution
- ability to distinguish detail of seprate objects that are close contrast
what did Robert Hooke use?
used the word cell to describe repetitive pockets he observed in cork
what did Antoni do during the time Hooke was using the word cell?
also observed cells but they were living (bacteria, protozoa, sperm) (called animalcules)
what’d Robert Brown do?
identified nucleus while studying orchids
who are Schleiden and Shawann in 1839?
proposed the cell is the basic unit of life
whos Rudolf Virchow?
beleived all cells arise only from pre-exsisting cells
whats the modern cell theory? (3 things)
- all cells are made up of 1+ cells
- all life functions take place in the cells (smallest unit of life)
- all cells are produced from pre-existing cells
who disproved spontaneous generation?
louis pasteur
what is spontaneous generation?
life appears out of non living matter
whats contrast
- difference between light and dark edges (adding stain improves this)
advantages and disadvantages to staining/fixing
advantages- improves contrast, able to see more, more clear
disadvantages- kills cells
whats flourescent stains
flourescent molocules bind to specific structures and are revealed under UV light
