Scientific Method And Homeostasis ch1 Flashcards
Control
A variable that remains unchanged or held constant to prevent its effects on the outcome and therefore may verify the behavior of and the relationship between independent and dependent variables.
Deductive reasoning
a logical process in which a conclusion is based on the concordance of multiple premises that are generally assumed to be true
Dependent variable
In an experiment, the dependent variable is the factor that responds when another factor is manipulated.
Effectors
A molecule that binds to a protein and affects the function of that protein.
Homeostasis
The steady-state physiological condition of the body.
Independent variable
In an experiment, when one factor is manipulated, a second factor responds. The independent variable is the factor that is manipulated.
Inductive reasoning
the process of using a series of specific observations to support the probability of a more general conclusion.
Integrator
incorporation of the genetic material of a virus in to the host genome. A term used to confirm the successful binding of foreign dna into an organisms own [[genome.
Negative feedback
the diminution or counteraction of an effect by its own influence on the process giving rise to it, as when a high level of a particular hormone in the blood may inhibit further secretion of that hormone, or where the result of a certain action may inhibit further performance of that action.
Positive feedback
the enhancement or amplification of an effect by its own influence on the process that gives rise to it.
Sensory receptor
A specialized structure that responds to specific stimuli from an animal’s external or internal environment; transmits the information of an environmental stimulus to the animal’s nervous system by converting stimulus energy to the electrochemical energy of action potentials
