scientific method Flashcards
what is the scientific method?
- observation(objective statement)
- ask a question
- do background research
- form a testable hypothesis
- test your hypothesis by doing an experiment
- record observations
- analyze and draw conclusions(did it align with a hypothesis or not)
- publish or communicate results
- retest by other scientists
what is a bias?
an inclination or leaning towards a specific result, making the conclusion of an experiment inaccurate
what is a blind study?
when the subject does not know the factors of the experiment that may affect the result of the experiment
what is a double-blind study?
when the scientist and the subject does no know the factors of the experiment that may affect the result of the experiment
why are scientific models helpful?
helps to picture structures we can’t see, a satisfactory explanation of what cannot be observed indirectly
what is a theory?
imaginative ways to explain why something happens
what is a hypothesis?
using scientific knowledge and past events to explain a question
what is a manipulated variable? Controlled variable? responding variable?
manipulated: a factor that is changed in an experiment
controlled variable: factors that are not changed
responding: wha
what is a scientific law?
describes and summarizes what happens
what is serial dilution?
stepwise dilution where the concentration decreases the same factor with each successive step
