mixtures Flashcards
what’s the difference between a mixture and a compound?
a mixture is not chemically attached, compounds are pure substances that exist in fixed proportions.
what is a homogeneous mixture?
a solution where the particles sizes are not visible to the naked eye.
what’s is a heterogeneous mixture?
a mechanical mixture where there are visible size differences between particles.
what’s a suspension?
a mechanical mixture where particles do settle after some time.
what’s a colloid?
a mechanical mixture where particles do not settle after some time.
what’s an emulsion? emulsifying agent? Examples?
the emulsion is the mixture of a liquid dispersed in a liquid. an example would be mayonnaise. emulsifying agents are substances that prevent things from separating into layers.
how does light interact with suspensions?
light is scattered very well, but when the particles settle, the light scattered is too small to see.
how does light interact with colloids?
light is perfectly scattered, and because particles don’t settle after some time, the beam of light is shown through the mixture.
how does light interact with solutions?
light is scattered by the particles, it bounces off all directions and is reflected and passes through another particle and another. when particles reflect light, it shines the same colour of the light.
