scientific method Flashcards
scientific method
a series of steps followed to solve problems.
hypothesis
an explanation that is based on prior scientific research or observations and that can be tested.
controlled experiment
is an experiment that tests only one factor, or variable, at a time.
variable
a factor in an experiment that’s adaptable to change.
control group
a group in an experiment or study that does not receive treatment by the researchers and is then used as a benchmark to measure how the other tested subjects do.
experimental group
a group that receives a treatment in an experiment. The “group” is made up of test subjects (people, animals, plants, cells etc.) and the “treatment” is the variable you are studying.
step 1
Ask a question.
step 2
make a hypothesis.
step 3
conduct an experiment.
step 4
report results.
step 5
analyze information.
step 6
collect data.
meter
the basic unit of length in the SI ( symbol , m)
liter
a metric unit of capacity.
gram
a metric unit of mass equal to one thousandth of a kilogram.
volume
a measure of the size of a body or region in three dimensional space.
mass
a measure of the amount of matter in an object.
density
the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance.
area
a measure of the size of a surface or a region
Celsius
previously known as the centigrade scale, is a temperature scale used by the International System of Units.
