Scientific Method Flashcards
Hypothesis
A hypothesis is one idea that can be tested. It is normally written as an “if/then” statement.
Variable
any factor that can change during an experiment
Independent Variable
in the experiment, the factor that is being investigated; the variable that is being deliberately changed to determine its effect
Dependant variable
in an experiment, the factor that changes in response to the independent variable; factor being measured
Qualitative data
data that is subjective: quotes and statements etc
Quantitative data
data that is measured numerically
Conclusion
A conclusion is a statement that is supported or disproved by the data. It relates back to the particular hypothesis under investigation. Often a conclusion will contain a number of inferences to explain experimental results.
Controlled Experiment
the experiment needs to be controlled to ensure this the experiment requires controlled variables
Validity
is an experimental designs that tests what it proposes to test
Reliability
means would you get the same results again and again
Improve Reliability
- test, retest (as many tests as possible)
- increase sample size
Improve validity
- control variables
- increase sample size
