Cells Flashcards
Cell Membrane:
protects the cell and supports it, controls what enters and leaves the cell, it is a phospholipid bilayer also called plasma membrane
Nucleus
controls most activity in the cell, contains DNA (coded instructions from producing molecules)
Nucleolus
ribosomes are formed within nucleolus
Cytoplasm
clear fluid within cell that contains organelles, moves materials throughout cell
Ribosome
makes proteins in cell, proteins are vital for life, they are free to move in cytoplasm or on rough Endoplasmic reticulum
Golgi Apparatus
cells that make saliva, package chemicals can be stored inside or move outside the cells; cell packaging plant
Endoplasmic Reticulum
series of folded membranes that form sacs or tubes
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
detoxifies drugs, makes lipids, no ribosomes
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
ribosomes attached, these ribosomes synthesis (make) proteins
Lysosome
made by googols apparatus, full of digestive enzymes to digest unwanted particles, help white blood cells destroy bacteria; clean up crew
Vacuoles
store food, water or waste material in plant cells- are very large
Mitochondria
energy producers (powerhouse of cell), convert chemical energy to useable energy
Cytoskeleton
can help cells move, overlapping network of filaments and fibres that support the cell and maintains it shape
Centrioles
help to organise the cell during cell division, they migrate to either side of the cell and help pull it apart
Flagellum
extension of the cytoskeleton
