scientific method Flashcards
1
Q
what is the deductive approach
A
if one proposition is true then others may be deduced from it
2
Q
deductive approach - medieval view of heavens & motions of planets
A
- they were perfect & a circle was a perfect shape so planets have to move in a circle
3
Q
deductive approach - how did it led to a challenge to understanding of how planets moved
A
- conflicted with evidence astronomers had to find another explanation
- thought perfect motion had to be in circles some way & alternate explanations far too complicated so idea of circular motion challenged which challenged view that heavens were perfect
4
Q
inductive approach
A
depends on observation and testing
5
Q
inductive approach - what do scientists do
A
- observe & gather evidence for what’s being examined and seeks to eliminate all irrelevant factors
- analyse evidence & draw conclusions
- devise experiment to test hypothesis
- argue for theory that will explain evidence
- when there’s a theory use deduction to predict things that should be the case
6
Q
inductive approach - what is scientism
A
view science alone can give true knowledge of reality that it alone can determine what is meaningful & will eventually explain everything q
