- modern science began to emerge between 16th & 18th century
- evolution, relativity, quantum mechanics, neuroscience had changes during this time
- most of the ‘modern’ scientists were religious & didn’t see their work conflicting either christian teaching
- assumption that world was orderly & intelligible and a willingness to challenge allowed science to rise
- human reasoning previously seen as giving support for divine order but now follows own agenda
- authority of religion challenged with changing of human reason & challenged view that human reason was ‘fallen’

- empiricism is viewed as all knowledge starts from sense experience
- rationalism is view all knowledge starts with process of human thought
- francis bacon & isaac newton believe knowledge started worth observation & evidence
- descartes idea of systematic doubt is sense can sometimes deceive us & he doubted that all empirical evidence
- his only certain knowledge was of himself as a thinking being
