  • modern science began to emerge between 16th & 18th century
  • evolution, relativity, quantum mechanics, neuroscience had changes during this time
  • most of the ‘modern’ scientists were religious & didn’t see their work conflicting either christian teaching
  • assumption that world was orderly & intelligible and a willingness to challenge allowed science to rise
  • human reasoning previously seen as giving support for divine order but now follows own agenda
  • authority of religion challenged with changing of human reason & challenged view that human reason was ‘fallen’

  • empiricism is viewed as all knowledge starts from sense experience
  • rationalism is view all knowledge starts with process of human thought
  • francis bacon & isaac newton believe knowledge started worth observation & evidence
  • descartes idea of systematic doubt is sense can sometimes deceive us & he doubted that all empirical evidence
  • his only certain knowledge was of himself as a thinking being
