SCIENTIFIC METHOD Flashcards
A process used by scientists to find answers to a question
or to solve a problem.
Scientific Method
Uses your 5 senses to describe a result (color, odor,
shape, or some other physical characteristic)
Qualitative Observation
Uses numbers or measurements to describe a result.
Quantitative Observation
A prediction or a possible explanation to the question or
problem which can be tested in an experiment.
Hypothesis
An experiment in which only one variable is changed at
a time. All other variables should be unchanged or “controlled”.
Controlled Experiment
The variable that is purposely changed by the experimenter.
Independent Variable
The variable that changes as a result of the independent
variable. What you observe, measure, and record during
the experiment
Dependent Variable
Serves as the comparison. It is the same as the experimental group, except that the one variable that is being
tested is removed
Control Group
A statement that sums up what you learned from an experiment and states if the hypothesis is proven or disproven
Conclusion
the information or observations gathered during an experiment
Data
The factors in an experiment that can be changed
Variable
the variables in an experiment that are kept the same
Constants or controlled variables
A step-by-step documentation of an experiment
Procedure
a way to record the observations made during an experiment in an orderly way
Data table
a tool to visually represent data and to help determine the
relationship between variables in an experiment.
