Scientific Method Flashcards
Observation
Making an observation that leads to a question to investigate
Focus question
A question that defines the problem for investigation
Gather information
Research existing information on the topic
Hypothesis
A statement that answers the focus question and can be tested
Predictions
A guess at the expected results of the experiment.
Controlled experimentation
A test that tests the effect of a single experimental condition.
Control group
Set up in which no change is made
Experimental Group
Differs from the control group by one factor
Experimental Factor
The factor being tested
Data Collection
Organize and record data collected during the controlled experiment
Independent Variable
The experimental factor
Dependent Variable
Data collected to show the effect of the independent variable
Conclusion
What was learned from the data collected?
Theory
A broad statement that is supported by lots of evidence and often ties to several hypotheses together
