Ions
An atom that has lost or gained an electron
It results in charges being created
Isotope
Atoms with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons.
Valence Electron
Electrons located in the outermost shell of an atom
Ionic Bond
Loss or gain of electrons that results in charges, metal + non-metal
Covalent Bond
Equal sharing of electrons, no charges created, non-metal and non-metal
Polar Bond
Unequal sharing of electrons. Partial charges created, non-metal + non-metal
Cohesion
Water is polar, so water molecules are attracted to other water molecules (opposite charges attract). Therefore, water sticks to itself.
Adhesion
Water is also attracted to other polar molecules (opposite charges attract). Therefore, water will stick to some surfaces.
Surface Tension
The surface of water uses cohesion to stick together to resist external force.
Atomic Number
Tells: # of protons
Average Atomic Mass
Tells: Protons + Neutrons
Mass number
Tells: number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus
