Science - The Need to Respire Flashcards
Why do we need to respire?
The body must continuously bring oxygen to body cells and get rid of CO2.
Name the different gases in the Earth’s atmosphere and give their percentages.
Nitrogen - 78%
Oxygen - 21%
CO2 and other gases - 1%
Why is there more oxygen than nitrogen in the atmosphere?
Nitrogen has a high heat capacity and low volume expansion when exposed to heat.
Oxygen has low heat capacity, and high volume expansion when exposed to heat.
We would explode.
What are the differences between breathing and respiration?
Breathing is just a phase. It is the movement of air inside the lungs. Muscles are involved. Energy is released. It takes place in and out of the lungs.
Respiration is the overall exchange of gases between the atmosphere, blood, and cells. Muscles are NOT involved. Energy is also released. It takes place in ALL body cells.
Taking air in and out of the lungs
Breathing
Exchange of oxygen and CO2 between the AIR and the BLOOD in the lungs
External Respiration
Exchange of oxygen and CO2 between the BLOOD and the BODY CELLS
Internal Respiration
Using oxygen to break down sugar in food.
Cellular Respiration
What does cellular respiration produce?
- ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) as energy
- CO2 as waste
Use of oxygen by the cell
Oxidation
Hollow space with coarse hairs coated in mucus (with mucus glands)
Nasal cavities
Common passageway for food and air
Pharynx
