Science Test Tomorrow 1-23-25 Flashcards
MAKE SURE TO STUDY THE CONCPET AND UNDERSTAND IT
Physical reaction
A change that alters the form or appearance of a substance but does not make it into a new substance
Chemical reaction
Change in matter that produces one or more substances
Where are the reactants and products of a chemical equation located?
Reactants-before yield sign/—>
Products-after yield sign/—>
- What is the principle of conservation of mass? What is an example?
EXAMPLES:
Alka-Seltzer tablet lab
Pg 58: iron and sulfur
Principle of Conservation of Mass
in a chemical reaction, the total mass of the reactants must equal the total mass of the products
What is the difference between an open and closed system? What is an example of each?
Open System: matter can enter from or escape to the surroundings
Closed System:
matter is not allowed to enter or leave
Examples of an open and closed System
Open-burned out fire, burning match
Closed-pear decaying under glass, chemical reaction inside a sealed plastic bag
Do you know how to balance an equation?
Can you identify it as synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, or double replacement?
To balance, multiply subscripts in elements by coefficients until the numbers on both sides of the line equal each other
