Science Test: Process of the human body #17 Flashcards
Note 17
What two systems make up the circulatory system?
cardiovascular and lymphatic systems
What are the three main function of the circulatory System?
- Transports nutrients and other life sustaining resources around the body
-Removes some waste products from the body
-helps fight of disease and infection
What is the main structure of the circulatory system?
The heart
Describe the structure and function of the heart
-blood moves from the heart to the lungs and back to the heart BEFORE it get pumped around the body
-Contains 2 atria and two ventricles
Define Atria
the top chambers of the heart that receive blood
Describe Ventricles
the bottom chambers of the heart that pump blood out
Describe the functions of the cardiovascular system
pumps blood throughout your body
describe the double loop system of blood flow
-First loop goes to the lungs and back to the heart
-second loop goes throughout the body and back to the heart
what are the main functions of red blood cells?
responsible for OXYGEN around the body
Arteries
carry blood away from the heart. Thick walled and muscular blood vessel
Veins
Carry blood back to the heart. Has thinner walls than arteries
Capillaries
Tiny blood vessels where substances are exchanged between the blood and body. They also connect veins and arteries
Define blood pressure
The force with which ventricles of the heart contract
Red blood cells
Transport oxygen and carbon dioxide
White blood cells
Fight diseases
Platelets
Help wound clots
Plasma
The liquid part of the blood
What is the lymphatic system and what is the lymphatic systems main functions?
a network of vessels that return fluids to the bloodstream from surrounding cells
What is a lymph?
The fluid inside the lymphatic vessels
Why is lymph important for the body?
consists of water, white blood cells, and other dissolved materials
What are lymph nodes?
small knobs of tissue which filters the lymph
