Science Test 3 - Ecology Flashcards
What is predation?
The predator kills and eats the prey
What is parasitim?
One organism lives on or in another organism (host) feeds of it, parasite harms the host
What is a food web?
Multiple food chains put together.
What is an ecosystem?
A community interacting with the environment
What is biotic?
Living thing
What is abiotic?
Non-living thing
What is competition?
Occurs within the same species, competing for resources
Why are decomposers so important?
Keeps ecosystem functioning so it doesn’t run out of resources.
Why is photosynthesis so important within the ecoysystem?
It produces glucose and oxygen to help the ecosystem.
What is a population?
A group of the same organisms living together
What is an organism?
A living thing
What is the trophic level?
The positions of an organism is a food chain
Where is the energy stored in biomass transferred to?
Transferred from one trophic level to another (by eating, defecation, etc) with some being lost as heat energy.
What is chlorophyll?
The pigment inside the chloroplast that absorbs sunlight.
What is photosynthesis?
The process where sunlight is converted into chemical energy.
What is a community?
A group of populations living together
What is the pyramid of energy?
Shows amount of energy trapped per area at each stage of a food chain
What is mutualism?
Two organisms living close together and both benefit
What is a producer?
Converts sunlight to chemical energy by photosynthesis. (Usually plants, some bacteria).
What is another word for a producer?
Autotroph.
What to decomposers do?
Recycle matter for producers to reuse and breaks down dead bodies and waste.
What is the pyramid of biomass?
Shows total mass of organisms at each stage of a food chain
What is a consumer?
All organisms that need to eat other organisms to survive.
What is another word for a consumer?
Heterotroph.
What is commensalism?
One organism benefits and the other is unaffected
What do plants and microrganisms use photosynthesis for?
To produce biomass (Living material)
What is the pyramid of numbers?
Shows relative number of organisms at each stage of a food chain
