Science Test 1 - Nervous System Flashcards
What is second function of the nervous system?
Coordinates response to changes
What is the term given to describe the whole process from sensory to interneuron to motor neuron?
A reflex arc
What is the gap between neurons called?
Synapses or synapse
What is a Relay Neuron?
Creates neural circuits that enable communication between sensory and motor neurons and the central nervous system
What is a nervous system tissue?
Nervous Tissue
What is a nervous system cell?
Neuron
What is a sensory neuron?
Carries messages from receptor cells in sense organs
What is stimuli or stimulus
Changes
What happens in reflexes?
The message travels to the spinal cord then gets turned around by an interneuron. This neuron sends the signal straight back out to the motor neuron, making the muscle move.
What is third function of the nervous system?
Transmits messages in form of electrical signals
What are the two categories of the PNS (Peripheral nervous system)
Somatic and Autonomic
What are effectors?
Muscles or glands that translate the messages into action
What is a nervous system organ?
Brain, spinal cord, nerves and sensory organ
What is first function of the nervous system?
Detects changes that impact the body
What is a motor neuron?
Carries messages from brain and spinal cord to effectors
How do neurons communicate?
Gap between neurons (synapase), and chemicals (neurotransmitters) diffuse across gap before next cell is stimulated.+
What is Parasympathetic PNS?
Rest and digest (Slows down and relaxes the body, allowing it to rest)
What is the human nervous system?
Communication system that controls all parts of body
What are the two main parts of the human nervous system?
Central nervous system - brain, spinal cord and peripheral nervous system - cranial nerves, spinal nerves
What is the central nervous system?
Control center of the body that provesses incoming messages from the environment
What is Sympathetic PNS?
Flight/Fight/Freeze (Speeds up bodily processes)
Cerebellum
Responsible for muscle control, including balance and movement
Cerebrum
Initiates and coordinates movement and regulates temperature
What is a reflex?
A reflex is when your body needs to respond very quickly
Brain stem
Responsible for many vital functions of life
Hypothalamus
Works directly on autonomic system to manage functions
What is Autonomic?
Regulates automatic body function (heatbeat), Involuntary
What is somatic?
Takes info to and from our CNS to respond to the environment (VOLUNTARY)
What is the order of the stimulis response plan?
Stimulis, sensory neuron, brain (control centre), motor neuron, effector, response.
What are the two parts of the autonomic PNS?
Sympathetic and parasympathetic
Pituitary gland
Regulates growth metabolism and reproduction through the hormones it produces
