Science Term 3 test Oceans Flashcards
Define Food Chain
A food chain describes how energy and nutrients move through an ecosystem.
Rearrange in correct oder: grasshopper, Owl, Grass, Mouse
Grass - Grasshopper- Mouse - Owl
Producers
They produce their own food using carbon dioxide and water.
Consumers
Things that eat other living things (Herbivore omnivore or carnivores)
Primary consumer
Organisms which eat producers (herbivore)
Secondary consumer
Organisms that eat primary consumers (Carnivores)
Tertiary consumers
Organisms that eat secondary consumers (Carnivores)
Rearrange: Worm, Snake, Apple, Bird
P: Apple, PC: Worm, SC: Bird, TC: Snake
Mouse, Corn, eagle
P: Corn, PC: Mouse, SC: Eagle
Define food web
Consists of all the food chains in a single ecosystem
Carnivore
Eats other animals
Ecosystem
Different organisms interacting with each other in an enviroment
Herbivore
Eats only plants
Omnivore
Eats meat and plants
Decomposer
Breaks down decaying or dead organisms
Define energy pyramid
Only about 10% of the energy consumed is passed up the food chain (I.e to the animal that eats it)
Define Habitat
Is the place an organism lives that contains all the things it needs to thrive
Define Abiotic
Non living parts of a habitat e.g. temperature, water, sun
Define Adaptation
The process whereby a species evovlves characteristics that enable it to survive in a particular habitat
Define Physical Adapations/structual adaptation
- A changing feature of a living thing that helps it to survive in a particular environment.
- Changes usually happen over a very long time (Years)
Define behavioural adapation
- A thing that a living thing does to survive in a particular environment, such as the way they feed, breed, or move.
Fennec foxes have large ears to cool them down
Structural
Bears hibernating
Behavioural
Birds migrating
Behavioural
Spines on cactus
Structural
Polymers- Plastic
*Polymers are large molecules built up from small units called monomers
* They can be repeated any number of times from 100 to 1,000,000
Define Microplastics
- Microplastics are tiny plastic particles
*Less than 5mm in diameter
*They are the result of larger plastic items being broken down by environmental factors e.g. sun radiation and ocean waves.
