SCIENCE TERM 1 2025 Flashcards
Law of conservation of matter.
states that matter cannot be created or destroyed but changes state or form.
Law of conservation of energy.
states that energy cannot be created or destroyed but only be converted from one form to another.
What is temperature? How do we measure temperature?
is a measure of how hot something is (amount of kinetic energy).
What is heat?
is the transfer of thermal energy between objects with different temperatures (always flowing from the high- temperature to the low- temperature).
What is conduction?
the vibration of particles is passed on from one particle to the next to the next etc.
What is convection?
as air is heated, its particles gain energy and move further apart in liquid and gases.
What is radiation?
is the transfer of heat that does not rely on contact the energy can travel through empty space.
What is an conductor?
substances that transfer heat easily are conductors.
Examples of a conductor.
Silver, gold, aluminum and copper.
What is a insulator?
are poor conductors of heat and can sometimes block heat transfer completely.
Examples of an insulator.
Plastic, air, cloth, wood and rubber.
What are the 2 types of waves?
Longitude waves and Transverse waves.
What are Longitude waves?
the particles vibrate forward and backwards in the direction of the wave.
What are Transverse waves?
particle movements is at right angles to the motion of the wave.
What is reflection?
the production of light by living things as a result of chemical reactions.
What is refraction?
What is the definition of transparent?
What is the definition of translucent?
What is the definition of opague?
