Ecosystem
a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
Producer
An autotrophic organism that serves as a source of food for other organisms in a food chain.
Consumer
A living organism that gets energy by consuming other organisms.
Scavenger
an animal that feeds on carrion, dead plant material, or refuse.
Decomposer
An organism that feeds on dead animals and releases carbon dioxide and oxygen
Food chain
A line that shows where the energy is going
Food web
Lots of food chain connected in one big web
Energy pyramid
A pyramid that goes from producer to top consumer and shows the amount of energy each one gets. The bottom one gets the most and the top gets the least amount
Heterotrophs
Organisms that get energy by consuming others to get energy
Autotroph
An organism that makes energy by itself
Ex: plant
Trophic level
each of several hierarchical levels in an ecosystem
Biomass
The total mass of organism gives off
Nitrogen Fixation
the chemical processes by which atmospheric nitrogen is assimilated into organic compounds
Abiotic
A non-living thing
Biotic
A living thing
