Science Study Guide Flashcards
What is the definition of Flight?
Flight is the action or process of flying through the air.
What is the definition of Lift?
Lift is a force that acts against weight caused by air moving over and under the wings.
What is the definition of Weight?
Weight is the force that pulls everything toward the earth due to gravity.
What is the definition of Thrust?
Thrust is the force that moves an object forward, which can be provided by muscles, engines, and gravity.
What is the definition of Drag?
Drag is the force that acts against thrust caused by the resistance of air.
What is the definition of Aerodynamics?
Aerodynamics is the study of how air moves around things.
What are 3 the Principles of air?
- Air has mass: Mass is a measure of matter, Air is made of about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and 1% argon.
- Air takes up space: Like all forms of matter, air takes up space. You can test this by blowing up a balloon.
- Air can be compressed: Air can be squeezed together. Air compressors are used to inflate bicycle tires.
What is Bernoulli’ s principle
Bernoulli’ s principle states the faster air flows, the less pressure it has.
What are Newton’ s laws of motion.
- A body continues to be at rest or in motion unless an external force is applied to it
- The greater the mass of the body, the greater the force needed to accelerate it.
- For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
