Science: sound Flashcards
Does sound travel faster than light?
No
How does sound travel?
Through waves.
How are sounds caused?
They are caused by the vibration of particles in a median (eg:air)
How is sound energy transferred?
Through particles.
Why can’t sound travel through a vacuum?
Because there is no particles for it to travel through
What is frequency?
The number of complete waves in a second.
What does high frequency mean?
High pitch.
What does low frequency mean?
Low pitch
What is the range of human hearing I’m hertz (Hz)
About 20 - 20,000Hz
What is sound measured in?
Decimals (db)
What is ultra-sound?
Any sound above 20,000 Hz
Describe an echo?
A reflected sound.
What can echoes be used for?
To measure distances, eg how far away the seabed is.
How do you work out the speed of sound?
Divide the distance the time travels by the time it took.
How do you work the distance sound has traveled?
The speed of the time x how long it took
