Science/Section 2: Heat Transfer, Oct 16 Flashcards
what is energy
how fast molecules are moving
what is temperature
the average amount of energy of motion of each molecule of a substance
what is thermal energy
energy of motion in the molecules of a substance
how do we measure temperature
air temperature is measured with a thermometer
what is a thermometer
an instrument used to measure temperature. It consists of a thin glass tube with a bulb on one end that usually contains a liquid (alcohol or mercury)
how is heat transferred
radiation
conduction
convection
what is radiation
the direct transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves
what is conduction
the direct transfer of heat from one substance to another substance that is touching it
what is convection
the transfer of heat by the movement of fluid
how is heat transferred in the trophosphere
mostly through convection. Air near the Earht’s surface is also warmed by radiation and conduction.
