science-revision-newtons laws Flashcards
What is the net force of 0 mean?
Means it is a balanced force (equal force in both directions
eg. 100net from the left and 100net from the right
Means the object will stay still
What is newtons first law?
Law of inertia
- an object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion unless act upon by an unbalanced forced
What would happen if their was a car with a 100net force coming from the left direction and 60net force coming from the right direction? Which force is bigger/smaller?
This would equal a 40net force in the right direction.
The right force is bigger than the left force
What are some examples of potential forces that can slow it down?
- air resistance
- gravity
What is MASS?
The measure of the amount of matter in an object
What is mass measured in?
Kg
What is inertia?
Inertia is the property of an object that describes now much it will resist change to the motion of the object
If something is sitting still its ___________
If something is moving its a combination of _________ and ___________
Mass
Mass and philosophy
More mass means more ________
Inertia
If something is moving it has__________
Momentum
What is the momentum formula?
Momentum = mass x velocity
What is this unbalanced force that acts on an object in motion?
FRICTION!!!
What are the four main types of friction??
Siding friction- ice skating
Rolling friction- bowling
Fluid friction- (air or liquid) air or water
Static friction- initial friction when moving an object
What does friction cause?
Heat
What is Newtons second law?
Force equals mass times acceleration
F = ma
