Science quiz cards Flashcards
What is the Index of Refraction?
A property of a material that indicates how much the speed of light is bent.
What is a Mirage?
An image of a distant object produced by the refraction of light through air layers of different densities.
What are opaque materials?
Materials that only absorb and reflect light.
What are translucent materials?
Materials that transmit light but also scatter it.
What are transparent materials?
Materials that transmit light without scattering.
What is a Filter?
A transparent material that selectively transmits light.
What is coherent light?
Light of only one wavelength that travels in one direction with a constant distance between crests.
What is fluorescent light?
Light generated using phosphors to convert ultraviolet radiation to visible light.
What is incoherent light?
Light that can have more than one wavelength, can travel in more than one direction, and doesn’t travel with a constant distance between crests.
What is holography?
A technique that produces a three-dimensional image.
Example: Holography is used in security features on credit cards.
What is linearly polarized light?
Light with only a magnetic field that vibrates in one direction
What is an optical scanner?
A device that reads the intensities of reflected light and converts the information into digital signals.
What is total internal reflection?
Complete reflection of light at the boundary between two different materials.
What is incandescent light?
light that is generated by heating a piece of metal until it glows
What must an object do for you to see it?
It must reflect light.
What type of reflection shows a clear image?
Regular reflection.
What type of reflection does a brick wall cause?
Diffuse reflection.
What is a material through which nearly all light passes?
Transparent.
What is a material that lets some light pass through?
Translucent.
What type of objects do not allow any light to pass through?
Opaque.
What is white light a mixture of?
All visible wavelengths of the spectrum.
What do black objects do?
They absorb all colors and reflect little light.
What are the three primary colors of light?
Red, blue, and green.
What happens to white light when it is separated?
It is separated into the colors of the spectrum through refraction.
What does the retina contain that detects certain wavelengths of light?
Cone cells.
What do we see when the brain responds to signals from cone cells?
Colors.
What is a filter?
A transparent object that transmits some colors and allows others to pass through.
What is the color of the filter related to?
It is the same as the color of light it absorbs.
What is a pigment?
A colored material that absorbs certain colors and reflects others.
What does mixing pigments actually change?
The reflected color.
