SCIENCE (PERIODIC TABLE) Flashcards
Properties of metals
-malleable
-ductile
-good conductors of heat and electricity
-can be polished to produce a high shine
-solid at room temperature
Properties of non-metals
-brittle
-cannot be bent into shape
-usually melts at lower temperatures
-poor conductors of electricity
-cannot be polished to give a shine like metals
What elements in the same group have in common with each other
They have similar properties because they have the same number of valence electrons
How to identify the location (group and period) of an element
Group: valence electrons
Period: number of shells
How to to use the periodic table to identify the electron configuration for the first 20 elements.
Put them into shells:
E.g. Calcium (20)
2.8.8.2
How many electrons can go into each shell of an atom
1st shell: 2
2nd shell: 8
3rd shell: 8
4th shell: 2

What elements in the same period have in common with each other
