Science of Sleep Flashcards
What is content of consciousness influenced by?
forebrain mechanisms
What is level of consciousness controlled by?
ascending sys of connections from brainstem and hypothalamus
coma occurs with . .
lesions of the ascending arousal system or with diffuse bihemispheric dysfunction
wakefulness
awareness of self and one’s environment
rapid eye movement (REM) sleep
- unconscious
- but cortex active
- dreaming (vivid, emotional, bizarre)
- paralysis
- saccadic eye movements
- autonomic fluctuations
Saccades
quick, simultaneous movements of both eyes in the same direction
Non-REM sleep
- unconscious with little cortical activity
- cortical synchrony
- dreams brief and less vivid
- increased parasympathetic activity
(note: it’s difficult to wake out of deep nonREM sleep)
two major determinants of sleep
- homeostatic component
- circadian component
homeostatic component
prolonged wakefulness –> longer, deeper sleep with more stage 3 non-REM sleep
circadian component
alertness varies with time of day
ex of somnogens
- adenosine
- PGD2
- muramyl dipeptides
- TNFalpha
(Note: PGD2, muramyl dipeptides, and TNFalpha are increased during inflammation)
how does caffeine work?
blocks adenosine (a somnogen)
electroencephalogram measures
collective activity of cortical neurons
