10.1 Disorders of Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
Divisions of autonomic nervous system
- sympathetic
- parasympathetic
- enteric
fxn of nerve fiber type Aalpha
proprioception, somatomotor
fxn of nerve fiber type Abeta
touch, pressure
fxn of nerve fiber type Agamma
motor of muscle spindle
fxn of nerve fiber type Adelta
pain esp cold, touch
fxn of nerve fiber type B
preganglionic autonomic
fxn of nerve fiber type C
thermal, heat pain, mechanoreceptor; postganglionic autonomic
order nerve fiber types from largest to smallest diameter
Aalpha, Abeta, Agamma, Adelta, B, C
order nerve fiber types from highest to lowest conduction velocity
Aalpha, Abeta, Agamma, Adelta, B, C
heat defense response
- w/ incr core temp –>warm sensory neurons in medial preoptic hypothalamus activated –> incr skin vasodilation and sweating
- inhibited by cutaneous cold receptors
cold defense response
- tonically have warm sensitive neurons inhibiting cold responsive neurons of dorsal medial hypothalamus (DMH)
- cold exposure –> decr warm sensitive neuron activity –> activate BOTH heat conserve (skin vasoconstriction) and heat gen (via shivering and nonshivering mech)
- via PAG and nucleus raphe pallidus
Adie’s pupil
- tonic dilated pupil (but does react to prolonged light?)
- near response»_space; light response
- post-ganglionic short ciliary nerve lesion
Adie’s pupil with areflexia
Adie’s syndrome
Adie’s syndrome
Adie’s pupil with areflexia
Adie’s pupil with anhidrosis
Ross’ syndrome
Ross’ syndrome
Adie’s pupil w/ anhidrosis
Horner’s syndrome
- miosis (constricted pupil)
- anhydrosis
- ptosis (eyelid droop)
Horner’s syndrome - full
- ptosis
- meiosis
- anhidrosis
- impaired flushing (Harlequin syndrome)
- lower lid elevation (reverse ptosis)
- enopthalmos
Approach to pt w/ autonomic dysfxn
- focal
- regional
- generalized
- PNS features v. CNS features v. autonomic features only
autonomic periph neuropathies
- diabetes
- amyloidosis
- hereditary autonomic neuropathy
- immune mediated autonomic neuropathy
- infection assoc neuropathy
- toxic autonomic neuropathy
- idiopathic autonomic neuropathy
autonomic control of GI tract
- extrinsic - SNS and PNS
- intrinsic - enteric nervous system
What modulates the enteric nervous system?
extrinsic nervous system
What are the intrinsic plexuses of enteric nervous system?
Auerbach’s and Meissner’s plexus
autonomic response to orthostatic change?
- blood pooling in dependent areas
- baroreceptor mediated reflex response
(vasomotor, cardiac, endocrine) - SBP decr 5-10mmHg and DBP incr 5-10 mmHg
- HR incr 10-20 bpm
