Neuro Lab 1 Flashcards
At what level does the spinal cord end?
L1 or L2
Where are enlargements found in the spinal cord and why?
- cervical enlargement (because need lots of nerves for arms; where nerves of brachial plexus originate)
- lumbosacral enlargement (b/c need lots of nerves for legs; where nerves of lumbosacral plexus originate)
Where does the C8 root exit?
between C7 and T1
Ventral/anterior roots . . .
motor outflow tracts
Dorsal/posterior roots . .
largely sensory (fibers from both cutaneous and deep structures)
layers of meninges
PAD
pia directly on
arachnoid
dura
At what level of the spine, is a lumbar puncture performed?
L4-5
(i.e. below where the spinal cord ends at L1-2
basal ganglia (or basal nuclei)
a group of nuclei of varied origin in the brains of vertebrates that act as a cohesive functional unit. They are situated at the base of the forebrain and are strongly connected with the cerebral cortex, thalamus, and other brain areas
Where are dorsal root ganglia located?
outside the dura
What is gray matter?
predominantly cell bodies
What is white matter?
predominantly myelinated axons
posterior horns of gray matter
receive sensory inputs
anterior horns of gray matter
sites of cell bodies of motor neurons that directly innervate muscles
What part of the brain does the anterior cerebral artery feed?
sagittal and median portions of cortex
What part of the brain does the posterior cerebral artery feed?
occipital lobes and inferior temporal lobes
