Science of Drug Misuse Flashcards
What is dispositional tolerance?
Less drug reaches the active site
What happens in dispositional tolerance?
Less drug absorbed
Drug metabolised faster
More drug excreted
What is pharmacodynamic tolerance?
Site of action is less affected by the drug
What happens in pharmacodynamic tolerance?
Fewer drug receptors
Less efficient drug receptors
Physiology of the reward center?
Neurones project from the ventral tegmental area to the nucleus accumbens and prefrontal cortex.
When VTA neurones are stimulated dopamine is released, causing a sensation of pleasure/rewards.
Actual purpose of the reward center?
Normally activated by eating, drinking and sex therefore encouraging healthy behaviours that lead to propagation of genes.
