Science: NL (Newton's Laws Flashcards
Why does the coin drop in the cup when the card is flicked away?
It drops in the cup because of gravitational potential energy, and pull force.
What held the coin back when the card was moved?
Gravitational Energy and force held the coin back when the card was moved.
What happens to the coin if the card is pulled slowly?
The coins get pulled on the card and fall onto the table.
Could we pull the card away rather than pushing it away?
Yes.
Where do we see this event applied in daily life?
When my papa is cooking pancakes, he pulls the frying pan away sometimes.
Simulation:
-Place a 200 kg refrigerator on the skateboard
-Set the Applied Force to 0 Newtons
-Press Play
-Watch the speed
What did you do to move the item?
We added force by applying 1 newton.
What do you need to do to move the item faster?
Apply more force by increasing the newtons.
When an object reaches maximum speed and force is no longer being applied, what happens?
The cart with both of the boxes on top of it rolls down and down and keeps rolling even though force is no longer applied. The speed is always the same when it has no force.
Simulation:
-Place a 200 kg refrigerator on the skateboard
-Set the Applied Force to 0 Newtons
-Press play
What Happens?
Nothing happens.
True or false?
A force of 1 Newton can move a 200 kg refrigerator
True
True or false?
A force of 50 newtons moves a 200 kg refrigerator the same speed as 1 Newton of force
False
True or false?
To slow an item down, you need an applied force in the OPPOSITE direction
True
True or false?
The ONLY way to move an item is to apply a force
True
True or false?
Once an item is moving, it does not stop
True
Create Your Own!
Create your own statements using the simulator. Include the amount of force needed to move, the mass of the item of your choosing, and speed the cart moves at.
Example: A force of 3 Newtons can move two 50 kg boxes at a speed of 0.8 m/s
Possible answers:
A force of 500 Newtons can move 1 200 kg refrigerator at the speed of 40.0 m/s
A force of 0 newtons can move a 50 kg box at a speed of 40.0 m/s
