Science inquiry Term 1 Flashcards
Use of controlled experiments. How difference occurs between the results.
investigate relationship between factors/variables by an almost identical set up with one variable different.
Difference in results are due to variable change.
What is a survey? What data do they collect? add an example
Systematically collecting info about an aspect of study.
Collect data from large groups of subjects
e.g. questionnaire/interview
What is trial and error? What do they allow?
Systematic process-one attempt to solve a problem followed by another
Allow investigator to gradually find solution to problem
Ways to add safety
-fire extinguisher
-fire blankets
-fume hoods
-eye washes
-safety glasses
-gloves
-face masks
-protective clothing
-check for allergies, health problems
What are the principles of ethics? Define ethics
A set of moral values and principles
Voluntary participation
Informed consent
Risk of harm (none)
Confidentiality
Anonymity
What is the difference between repetition and reflection. What do they aid in doing?
Rep-same experiment many times
Ref-a number of identical experiments running together/performing the experiment on a large number of subjects at the same time
Help to demonstrate the results are consistent.
Define accuracy. How does it occur?
Measure of how close data is to the exact value, based on equipment used
i.e calibrated correctly
Define reliability. How does it occur?
extent to which an experiment gives same result each time it is performed.
Due to larger sample size or repetition.
Define valid. How does it occur?
Experiment is testing what it set out to test.
Due to controlled variables
Difference between quantitative and qualitive data
quant-expresses in numbers and usually involves measurements
qual-observation that do not involve numbers or measurements
What is systematic error
flaws in the method or apparatus that lead to results that are either always above or always below the true value
What is random error
have measurement that are spread randomly above or below the true value
Define measurement error
Difference between a measurement and the true value of what is being measured
4 graph types and their uses
-bar/column (discrete data)
-histograms (frequencies-no gaps)
-line graphs (continuous data)
Define placebo
an inactive substance that looks like the drug or treatment being tested.
