Science inquiry skills Flashcards
What is reliability
Measures results consistently and stability
What is validity
accurately measures relevant information
what are the essential features of experimental designs
- Essential feature = Researcher manipulates independent variable
- random allocation into control and experimental groups [experimental group is exposed to independent variable]
what are the essential features of a quantitative observational design
- Essential feature = Researcher observes outcome of natural variation in factor of interest
- occurs when its unethical to put participants into situations
In qualitative design measures
What is a focus group
Focus groups refer to a group interview technique that obtains data through discussion between research participants in a group setting.
In qualitative design measures
What is the delphi technique
The Delphi technique uses a series of self-administered questionnaires and feedback to obtain the opinion of experts in a field of interest.
They begin open ended and become close ended as they gather more responses in order to come to an agreement/consenus
What are behavioural counts as objective quantitative measure
Using behavioural counts is an observational method for which a researcher views a group of people or animals to record the number of times a particular behaviour occurs
what is sample and population
population refers to the entire group of research interest from which a sample is drawn.
sample refers to the specific participants within the test being conducted
what is standard deviation
The standard deviation summarises how far on average a score differs from the mean (variability)
List ethical considerations in psychological research
Participants’ rights:
- confidentiality
- voluntary participation
- withdrawal rights
- informed consent
- Debriefing
- Deception in research
