science exam - chemistry Flashcards
properties of ionic compounds
electrolytes, solid/crystals, brittle, high melting point, dissolve in water, metal bonded with nonmetal
how do you name ionic compounds?
the metal (positive cation) goes first. the nonmetal (negative anion) goes second and the ending is changed to ide.
how do you name molecular compounds?
prefixes like mono or di are used. prefix + first nonmetal, prefix + second nonmetal, replace the ending of the second nonmetal wth ide, the prefix mono is never used for the first nonmetal.
mono
one
di

tri

what are the types of reactions
synthesis, decomposition, single displacement, double displacement
what is an acid
pH is below 7 and 1 is so acidic u will die also tastes sour like vinegar (CH3COOH) train colourless and transparent mostly, dissolves in water to produce H+ ions
when a non-metal oxides react in water
what is a base
base is cool and nice and above 7 apparently not a banana but think of soap like banana soap most are colourless and transparent taste bitter
when a metal oxide reacts in water to form bases
what do/are neutralization reactions
reaction between an acid and base, forms an ionic compound and water. double displacement. produces heat.
whats the law of conservation of mass
in a chemical reaction the total mass of the reactants is always equal to the total mass of the products
ok thats all for this deck go to another one
have a good day… good luck on the exam!!!!
