Science-Elements, Atoms and Compounds Flashcards
What is an element?
An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into other substances.
State 6 elements
Hydrogen, Helium, Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Fluorine, Potassium, Calcium, Iron, Sodium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Sulfur, Chlorine, Iodine, Gold
What are atoms?
An atom is the smallest part of an element that can exist.
Compare the properties of one atom of an element to the properties of many atoms.
One atom on its own does not have the properties of the element because it is not in the solid, liquid or gas state.
What is a compound.
A compound is something comprised of 2 or more types of atoms or elements.
Why does a compound have different properties to the elements in it?
The properties of compounds are different because elements in a compound combine and become an entirely different substance with its own unique properties.
Write the chemical names for some simple compounds
Hydrogen (H), Helium (He), Carbon (C), Nitrogen (N), Oxygen (O), Fluorine (F), Potassium (K), Calcium (Ca), Iron (Fe), Sodium (Na), Magnesium (M), Phosphorus (P), Sulfur (S), Chlorine (Cl), Iodine (I), Gold (Au)
