Science-Cells Flashcards
What is a cell?
Cells are the building blocks of life. They are the smallest units found in an organism. One cell organisms are called unicellular organisms and lots of cells make up an organism.
How to use a microscope
- Move the stage to its lowest position.
- Place the object you want to observe on the stage.
- Select the objective lens with the lowest magnification.
- Look through the eyepiece and turn the coarse-focus knob slowly until you see your object.
- Turn the fine-focus knob until your object comes into focus.
- Repeat steps 1-6 using an objective lens with a higher magnification to see the object in greater detail.
Functions of the parts of a cell animal
Cell Membrane-Controls what comes in and out of the cell.
Cytoplasm-Where the chemical reactions take place.
Nucleus-Controls the cell and contains genetic material.
Mitochondria-Where respiration happens.
Functions of a cell plant
Cell wall-strengthens the cell and provides support.
Vacuole-Keeps the cell firm.
Chloroplasts-Where photosynthesis occurs.

Mitochondria-Where respiration happens.
Similarities and differences between plant and animal cells.
Plant cells have a vacuole, cell wall, chloroplasts animal cells don’t.
Specialised animal cells
Nerve cells
Sperm cells
Blood cells
Egg cells
Specialised plant cells
Leaf cells
Root hair cells
Substances that move in and out of cells
Water, Carbon dioxide and oxygen
Diffusion
Diffusion is the movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration . Diffusion occurs in liquids and gases when their particles collide randomly and spread out. Diffusion is an important process for living things - it is how substances move in and out of cells.
What is a unicellular organism?
A unicellular organism is an organism that is made up of just one cell. They’re not a plant or an animal because those are made up of lots of cells.
Structure of an amoeba
Pseudopods-Meaning ‘fake foot’ it plants it on the ground where it wants to go and moves its body in that direction.
Cell membrane-Controls what comes in and out of the cell.
Nucleus-Controls the cell and contains genetic material.
Food vacuole-digests the food.
Contractile vacuole-removes water and waste.
Structure of a euglena
Contractile vacuole-removes water and waste.
Nucleus-Controls the cell and contains genetic material.
Flagellum-Spins and propels the euglena towards light/food.
Eye spot-senses light.
