SCIENCE - DIGESTIVE SYSTEM Flashcards
Food is used for ….
Energy
Repair
Growth
Digest
Break down large food particles to smaller particles
Ingestion
Taking in food ( eating )
Digestion
Breaking down food
Absorption
Food passing into blood ( delivering to cells )
Assimilation
Food put use by the cells.
not done by the digestive system
Egestion
Passing any unabsorbed food
Mouth
Take and crush food
Adds amylase to food
Oesophagus
Carries food down to the stomach
Stomach
Churns food
Adds acid to the food
Small intestine
Further digestion
Digested food is absorbed into the blood
Large intestine
Water is absorbed into the blood
Waste left to be prepared for egestion
Salivary glands
Makes saliva
Saliva contains enzyme, amylase that breaks down food
Liver
Produces liquid bile
Bile helps to digest fat
Regulates amount of each food in blood
Gall bladder
Stores Nile until it’s needed
Pancréas
Makes enzymes to break down food
Amylase
An enzyme that breaks starch down to a sugar - maltose
Enzyme
Chemical found in living organisms which speeds up chemical reaction
Peristalsis
Muscular movements in digestive system to help to push food through the system along
Enzymes
Not used in a reaction - catalyst
Chemical reaction that happens in living organisms is called a biochemical reaction
Starch to glucose process
Starch - maltose - glucose
- amylase
- maltase
Mouth and salivary glands
Salivary glands produce enzyme amylase passed through tiny tubes to the mouth
Liver and Gall Bladder
Liver produces bile and is passed i through the bile duct to the gall bladder ( where it will store the bile until it is needed to digest fat )
Pancreas and Small Intestine
Pancreas produces enzymes which is passed through pancreatic duct to the small intestine for digestion
